Pinewood Derby in Uganda

This project had us partnering with the Wangler family from Illinois. Mom, dad and three kids headed to the Kireka community in Kampala, Uganda. Their plan was to put on a pinewood derby for the kids in the village.

According to the family, “While many people in the U.S. have at least heard of the term “pinewood derby,” this was a completely new concept to the people of the Kireka community so you can imagine how surprised and excited the kids were. The goal of the event was to provide a fun, safe activity for the kids of the Kireka community to enjoy. Kireka is largely a slum community so the kids do not typically have access to any of the fun activities we would consider ‘normal’ for kids to do (playing at the park, neighborhood games of tag or sports, riding a bike, etc.), consequently the idea of an organized event just for them was something incredibly special and unforgettable. Overall, the project was a smash hit! The kids all had a blast! It was so cool to see the joy on their little faces as their particular car raced down the ramp.”

Thank you, Wanglers, for the beautiful project and the amazing pictures that so perfectly capture the mood of the day. We are grateful to you!
